Studio SJM Architects

Our portfolio is grounded in Conservation & Heritage, Community and Education and our goal to create uplifting places that leave a positive social legacy. Our work at St Mark’s Church, Geilsland House and Chapel explore ways to creatively adapt different heritage building typologies for community benefit and catalyst for regeneration. Our traditional shop front refurbishments in Paisley and Govan which have immediately created a positive impact on the streets they occupy. Our work in the specialist education sector includes a collaboration on the new Harmeny Learning Hub and an ongoing relationship with the Donaldson Trust where we are supporting them in transforming their campus into a national hub for neuro-diversity, through a phased improvements plan. These projects have led to insightful research and understanding of designing spaces for specific needs and well-being that we are utilising in the creation of a welcoming entrance area for SRUC within an existing modernist building. Our work on traditional homes, such as The Wonderland House and Home for a Minimalist tested us to transform dated spaces into family spaces reflective of personal style on a limited budget. Our work at Melville Terrace explores new uses for redundant out-buildings and applies best conservation practices to the fabric upgrades.

SHORTLISTED

S2 Architect

Since the formation of the practice in 2021, we have been fortunate to undertake a wide variety of projects at a variety of scales across a number of different sectors. Primarily, our work has been focussed on the domestic and residential sectors, where we have been able to develop and demonstrate a proven track record for high-quality design, with a significant volume of our work realised through reputational recommendations by former clients. We have also been successful in building on former relationships with large scale developers, and have undertaken so far the development to site of 128nr. flats and two-storey housing at Carntyne for AS Homes (Scotland), and to planning stage a new 44nr unit flatted development in Cumbernauld for CCH (Scotland) Ltd. Both projects are being delivered for Sanctuary HA. We were also successfully appointed via a mini-design competition for a new-build eco home in Denny for a private client. Having originally explored options to extend the existing, poorly performing cottage, we promoted the benefits over creating a modern, new build eco home. Alongside these projects, we have also completed an extension to the Kenmure Medical Practice and have also undertaken small and large scale refurbishment projects, including the modernisation of Dullatur Golf Club.
