"Foundations" - Yulian Manev

The Alexander Thomson Scholarship 2015

The Glasgow Institute of Architects as trustees for the Alexander Thomson Scholarship invited entries (from students of architecture and architects under 30) for an A5 sized drawing on the theme of ‘detail’.

After receiving over 70 entries for the Alexander Thomson Scholarship - all of which were of a really high standard - The judging panel were able to create a shortlist of 9 entries.

After much deliberation the entry titled 'Foundations' by Yulian Manev was unanimously chosen by the judges to be the winner and the recipient of the Alexander Thomson Scholarship 2016 and the £1200.00 prize.

The judges comments on the winning entry included:

"The winning drawing is superb and exquisitely executed. The attention to the material qualities in a monochromatic rendering is reinforced by the strong composition of the page which sensitively balances the window and the wall."

"The overall winner, was recognised by the judging panel to show originality both in technique and composition. We all look forward to seeing Yulian's sketch book when he returns from his travels."

Three other submissions were chosen by they judging panel to be 'Highly Commended' and they included:

Ben Holmes 'Windows of Bath Abbey'

John Chia 'Lisboa'

Sally Collinson 'Kitchen Window'

The five other shortlisted entries were:

Deborah Pullinger 'untitled'

Eve Zeltina 'Ely Cathedral'

Otto Otojane 'The Third Element'

Samuel Little 'After Albert Kahn'

Sarah Lawson 'Charing Cross Mansion'

The Alexander Thomson Scholarship was established upon the Architects death in 1875 “for the purpose of providing a travelling studentship for the furtherance of the study of ancient classic architecture”. In 1890 the winner was a 22 year old architecture student called Charles Rennie Mackintosh, who used his scholarship on a sketching tour of Europe.

The GIA Council are delighted to continue the historic tradition of awarding The Alexander Thomson Travelling Scholarship 140 years after its inception. The response to the 2016 brief for an A5 hand drawing titled ‘detail’ produced work of an exceptionally high standard and it was encouraging to see the talent and quality of sketches being produced in a generation dominated by digital technologies - Michael Dougall (past GIA President)
