About the Niddrie Road EnerPHit Retrofit Project
All eight flats in this building were uninhabited prior to starting, which presented a unique opportunity to fully renovate this tenement’s external and internal fabric, including a comprehensive upgrade of the roof, stonework and rainwater goods to exacting, PassivHaus Enerfit standards.
This project was enabled by a Scottish Funding Council grant of £250k which tasked John Gilbert Architect’s team to investigate and disseminate innovative and sustainable approaches to housing. The bid was led by the UK Collaborative Centre for Housing Evidence, focusing on demonstrating a rigorous approach that demonstrably addresses energy efficiency in existing housing stock, fuel poverty and their effects on the health and well-being of inhabitants. Associated issues including urban heritage, building maintenance and management were also to be investigated. An extensive monitoring regime will be utilised to track ongoing building performance and living conditions once work has been completed and these flats are once again occupied.
